The Big Box Theater was created for Arty’s Creation Station at Lafayette’s Art Night Out. I built the theater in my garage in an afternoon and set up in front of Eats and Sweets on Festival Plaza. Kids were provided with a variety of collage materials and craft supplies and encouraged to create a puppet or mask. Many of them also performed for family and friends!
Building your own Big Box Theater is a great way to spend long winter afternoons, or as a play date activity. Designing and constructing the theater requires kids to use design and problem solving skills, and allows you to discuss the importance of reusing and re-purposing materials around the house. Build a diaper box block theater for younger kids, or encourage older kids to add details like curtains or backdrops. Simple puppets can be made with felt, yarn, and paper bags. Or invest in a set of beautiful puppets from a toy store. Create characters from your favorite books and recreate the stories. Old fables like The Lion and the Mouse make a great backdrop for design.
The Finished Theater had 40 or so kids perform in it over the course of an evening. Many kids signed the inside of the box after their show!
